Every evening after we’ve finished with supper and cleaned the kitchen, we take a family walk. Well, this evening our daughter chose to go out to her trampoline and jump until we were ready to leave.
She went out and we cleaned the kitchen. As I was heading upstairs to change out of my slippers, into a pair of shoes, I stopped by a window to look out to check on our daughter. Just as I did so, she performed her newest skill. A back-hand spring!
At the beginning of this school year, we decided to pull her from public schools and teach her from home instead. In addition to being homeschooled, we also decided to enroll her in gymnastics as not only an extracurricular activity outside of school, but also for the sport and so she could maintain social interaction with other kids her age.
When she began taking gymnastics classes, she was self-taught in cartwheels, handstands, somersaults, backbends, and backflips without the ‘spring’. Would you believe she learned all that just by watching movies like American Girl “McKenna”, a documentary on Olympic Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas, and “Raising the Bar”? Anyway, with her newfound skills she’s been learning from Coach, I can’t help but to feel proud. She’s got more skills than I had at her age!
